I started working at Oxfordshire County Council in April, everyone has that doubt in the back of their mind, am I doing the right thing? Is the grass greener on the other side?
All I can say, is ever since I started, I’ve loved every second. Initially, I was struck by the size and complexity of the organisation, but everyone’s been so welcoming, and our ‘buddy’ scheme has really helped me settle in.
This is a brand-new team working within the wider Environment and Place directorate. We’re thinking differently in terms of transport and travel; we’re focussed on delivering our Local Transport and Connectivity Plan and all the other strategic policies.
Join us and help shape the future of transport and planning in Oxfordshire
Oxford is known globally for being a leader in innovation and Oxfordshire and Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) is no different. We’re forward-thinking and passionate about making a real difference to people’s lives. We’re developing a county where communities can flourish in our spaces and places.
We’re at the cutting edge of transport and planning, set against a backdrop of a local authority that's really striving to deliver firsts, we want to be a leading authority in transport planning and to set the tone for the rest of the UK.
A good example of this is the recent delivery of over 150 electric buses in and around Oxford, which is the biggest fleet outside of London.
We’re the ‘green county’ and Oxford was recently named the greenest city in England. That’s testament to our commitment to supporting a shift away from car use and a movement towards active/sustainable travel.
We’re pushing the boundary and successful applicants will be able to stamp their own ideas on each role.
That’s something that I'm particularly passionate about, the ability to influence; the ability to help and to really make that difference on the ground.
These roles will give successful applicants an opportunity to develop into experts within their field and this is a place where you can influence real change fast.
The careers opportunities here at Oxfordshire County Council are endless. There are opportunities to work across different teams and you’ll work across a range of directorates from Day 1.
One of the great things about this role will be the collaborative work across not just transport, but also, the Climate, Placemaking and Behaviour teams – to name a few.
This creates a transformative learning environment and it’s a place where you can grow your skills, knowledge and contacts very quickly.
If you’ve got friends and colleagues who work or have worked at Oxfordshire County Council – talk to them.
That’s what I did. The overwhelming response was hugely positive, and everyone said what a great environment it was.
If this is something that excites you; if this is an area where you feel you can make that real difference, then we’re keen to hear from you.
